Substance Abuse – An Epidemic and Risk to the Youth and Healthcare Professionals
This course explores the growing epidemic of substance abuse and its impact on both Ghanaian youth and healthcare professionals. Participants will gain insights into the types, causes, and consequences of substance abuse—ranging from alcohol and prescription medication misuse to illicit drug dependency. The training emphasizes the psychosocial, clinical, and professional risks substance use poses in healthcare settings, including impaired judgment, burnout, and ethical breaches.
Healthcare professionals will be equipped with the skills to identify signs of abuse among patients, colleagues, and themselves, and to respond with appropriate interventions and referrals. The course also addresses national policy, public health strategies, and preventive approaches tailored to Ghana’s cultural and healthcare context.
