Diagnosing Mental Health Illnesses Among Healthcare Professionals

Course Description:
This course addresses the critical yet often overlooked issue of mental health among healthcare professionals. Participants will explore the unique stressors and occupational hazards that contribute to mental health challenges in clinical environments, including burnout, anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress.

With a focus on early recognition and accurate diagnosis, the course examines the presentation of mental health conditions in healthcare workers, who may mask symptoms due to stigma, fear of professional repercussions, or lack of support. Participants will learn to identify warning signs, understand diagnostic criteria, and differentiate between normal stress responses and clinically significant disorders.

The course also explores systemic issues such as workplace culture, support structures, confidentiality concerns, and access to mental health services. Emphasis will be placed on creating safe spaces, fostering peer support, and encouraging help-seeking behavior among colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the prevalence and risk factors of mental health disorders among healthcare professionals.

  • Identify signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, burnout, and PTSD.

  • Explore diagnostic approaches tailored to healthcare settings and provider populations.

  • Advocate for institutional policies that support mental health and well-being.
